Whether you do nothing but watch the peacocks in the trees while reading a book on your terrace or head into shabby around the edges but charming Galle (we did one day each), it was the perfect place to recharge before our Indian adventure.

My favourite hangout is Kahanda Kanda, surrounded by tea plantations and palm jungles. The Peacock Suite is my favourite, with ceiling-to-floor glass windows so you can lie in bed and watch the monkeys and peacocks in the forest below.
