Kahanda Kanda - Galle, 8000, Sri Lanka
Kahanda Kanda
Hammock 1
Kahanda Kanda (Yellow Moon Mountain) - usually known as KK. The hotel is located in the Buddhist village of Kahanda, which has a population of approximately 600 (99.9% are Buddhist and all speak Sinhala and very little English). The major industry in the village is rice farming which employs 250 villagers. Others in the village are employed in: - Tea (both estates and factories in neighbouring villages) - employ 150 people - Textile Factories in neighbouring villages – employ 55 people - Tourism in the Galle area – employs 10 people - Others are self-employed as Carpenters, Tailors, Three Wheeler drivers (Tuk Tuk’s), local corner store (called a ‘Kade’), post office, labourers or Government officers in the village. Tittagalla is the next door village, and with the generosity of our guests as well as donations that we have made, the village temple has been able to start the building of their Sunday School classrooms.

Galle Fort - UN World Heritage Site
Galla_Lighthouse3_236
As economic development in Sri Lanka began to take place in the 1990’s Galle Fort was identified by the Sri Lankan government as one of the country’s key cultural and heritage tourism destinations and today it is considered one of the best examples of a living fortified city built by Europeans in South and South East Asia. It only takes a walk through the streets to realize that it has a colourful & complex history dominated by over four hundred years of European rule (Portuguese 1505 - 1639, Dutch 1640 – 1795 & British 1796 - 1954). There is so much to discover and it is best to do it on foot. We will provide you with a map as well as our shopping & eating guide to ensure that you discover the best of this Fort

Whale Watching
whale-watching-mirissa
Thanks to the island’s leading wildlife expert Gehan de Silva Wijeyratne, it was recently discovered (in 2008) that Sri Lanka is one of the best places in the world for spotting Blue Whales – one of the most majestic mammals. It is an amazing thought that the Blue Whale is the largest living animal on earth! It is even more phenomenal to see this incredible mammal and other Whale species, not once but five or more times in the space of a few hours just off the coast of Galle. Whilst out spotting whales you will also see large pods of entertaining Spinner Dolphins! This is a trip that should not be missed, from January through to April each year.

Kahanda Kanda is just 10 minutes from some of the most beautiful beaches. If you would like to spend the morning or the day on the beach our two favourites are Wijaya and Mirissa. Sit on the beach and enjoy a seafood lunch at either of these beaches. In doing this you will be supporting local businesses – something that KK encourages. For those that want to surf, Hikkaduwa and Weligama are not far from KK. Closer to home is Why Beach, a small beach club where you can swim in the ocean, laze on a sun lounger and eat delicious home made Italian pasta. We provide a complimentary tuk tuk shuttle service for guests who wish to go there.

On The Tea Trail
tea-Pluckers-hands-2
Sri Lanka is known for its tea all around the globe. Introduced to the island by Scotsman James Taylor in 1867 after the failure of coffee, it quickly became one of the country’s most important exports and remains so today. Contrary to belief the low lands near the coast grows many of Sri Lanka’s best tea and accounts for 90% of the total value of tea in Sri Lanka. Topographically, this tea is grown in a virtual crucible fostering quick growth and lush, full leaves and tips. We recommend that you explore our Tea Trail which starts at KK learning the art of plucking your own tea from the resident female tea pluckers, you then head to the local tea factory to see the tea being processed and onto Kahanda village where you will experience how the villagers drink tea in the home of one of our tea pluckers. Alternatively we can take you to Handunugoda tea Estate, to see the entire process from beginning to end, do a tea tasting and even buy some Sri Lankan tea!

Buddhist Poya Experience
KK870_
The average Sri Lankan Buddhist visits the pansala (temple) four times a month, especially on poya days, which is a full moon day. The full-moon day is most important and is considered a national holiday for all Sri Lankans. It is a day of reverence for the faithful and a relaxing day away from work for those of other faiths. A tray of flowers is offered at each of the three places of worship, small oil lamps are lit (to represent wisdom and enlightenment), and incense is burned (to symbolize purity). Poya day ceremonies are conducted from dawn until dusk at all temples including those surrounding Kahanda Kanda. We suggest that all guests who are staying at KK on a full-moon Poya day either cycle or walk to one of the local temples, experiencing a puja ceremony and be blessed by the local monk

About
Directions
Kahanda Kanda, Angulugaha, Galle, Sri Lanka
