Background:
Buddhism is the dominant religion in Sri Lanka followed by 70% of the population. It plays an extremely important role in the country both spiritually and culturally. The villages surrounding Kahanda Kanda comprise of 99% Buddhists. Sunday School is an essential part of life for children from the surrounding villages.
The aims of Sunday School in Sri Lanka are for the children to:
- Learn good behaviour, right from wrong, the errors of society and drugs
- Learn a variety of subjects including Buddhists texts
Tittagalla Temple supports 200 families from 6 neighbouring villages accounting for 600 students aged from 4 – 18 years old. Classes comprise of about 30 students per class and run from 8am – 11.30am every Sunday. All classes are held in Sinhalese as very few speak English.
Objective:
To support the construction and development of a Sunday School building at the Tittagalla Temple:
- Raise US$10,000 to construct a building within the next 3 to 6 months (by end February 2010)
- Provide books and computers to the school
- KK staff to provide educational environmental awareness and training sessions once or twice per month

| Key Issues:
|
- The Tittagalla Sunday school currently hosts 600 students, yet has no covered class rooms. All classes are currently held in the grounds of the temple.
- The school has very few books or educational tools to assist the teachers & children.
- All teachers are voluntary and are only paid an equivalent of US$20 per year by the government to teach, which is for their uniform.
- The children and teachers have little or no awareness about the effects of Climate Change, environmental issues in their villages such as pollution from burning off, excessive rubbish dumping, biodiversity’s being destroyed, water salinity issues for farmers etc...
